OKAVANGO
Ubuntu Trail

Okavango Ubuntu Trail
Okavango Delta, Botswana
5 nights / 6 days
Personally guided by Alan

In association with the Ubuntu Society, Netherlands

I AM BECAUSE WE ARE. WE ARE BECAUSE THE PLANET IS. That is the essence of Ubuntu. An ancient African code of living that suggests the following: "I can only be the best possible version of myself, if you are the best possible version of yours. Therefore we will inter-be. However, we can only do this if we look after the earth."

It’s an ancient African philosophy exploring the art of negotiation, discussion, well-being and compromise; perhaps the keystones of harmonious modern living. These principles are as deeply rooted in the earth of the Okavango than the tallest baobab tree; alive, real and present.

The Ubuntu Trail explores two worlds; the wild and the tamed. The inner and the outer. To come back home to wilderness and reconnect with the harmony it affords us. And to re-define the relevance of integrating these ancient principles in our modern lives. Its a trail of leadership and discovery. And the backdrop? The beautiful Okavango Delta.

ITINERARY OVERVIEW

DAY 1: Arrive in Maun on flight from Johannesburg, and depart by air charter to Oddballs Camp, Okavango Delta. Afternoon walk and overnight.
DAY 2: Depart into the MOREMI GAME RESERVE by traditional dugout canoes and camp wild.
DAYS 3-4: Trail activities, walks and discussions based from our campsite.
DAY 5: Canoe back to Oddballs Camp, afternoon walk and overnight.
DAY 6: Air charter to Maun to connected with travel arrangements.

ABOUT UBUNTU

‘Ubuntu” is a life philosophy or way of being that originated in the rural communities of ancient Africa, some time before modern societies, as we know them, came into being. We can only imagine how challenging survival and well-being was in these days, with the harsh environmental and living conditions of the time. The origins of this philosophy emerged from the following pillars of community:
  1. That a community is only as effective or successful as the levels of co-operation between the individuals that form them.
  2. That individuals still retain their personally identity and sovereignty in this process.
  3. That this mutual co-operation is of free will without any expectation in return
  4. Care of nature, the environment and ecological principles as part of this leadership is an absolute necessity.

THE VALUE OF UBUNTU

Its our belief that nature offers a healing, redemptive and inspirational space, one that is extremely important in our personal and professional lives. Perhaps it can be said that we are all, despite our differences, in search of peace and well-being in our lives. To be known, To be relevant. The wilderness experience allows a gentle and uplifting discovery of this. These 'conversations from the heart' whereby nature and our fundamental connection with the wild is platformed and facilitated. For me, the well-being of nature cannot be separated from the well-being of our own selves. An understanding of ecological principles and a humbled relationship with them is the key.

The concept of Ubuntu is possibly the most relevant social/environmental keystone in the world. Empathetic ecological well-being, combined with, humility, consciousness and community support for one another, is essential to navigate the existential crises we are facing with hope and healing. in our modern world of turbulence, system challenges, changes and uncertainty, a durable model of personal leadership is required with which to navigate.

“I dream of our vast deserts, of our forests, of all our great wildernesses.
We must never forget that it is our duty to protect this environment.”
NELSON MANDELA

WHAT TO EXPECT

Luxury, pure luxury .....

Space, time and a sense of belonging! This is what we all seek, whether we know it or not, we want to belong and be significant. Here in the splendour of the Okavango Delta one feels a unique blend of honestly humble and incredibly powerful. This landscape is the perfect platform for an exploration of self and of wilderness.

On day two we move out by dugout canoe to find an island and set up our home for the next three nights. With minimal impact and wholesome, conscious provisions, the essence of the camp is simplicity and connectedness. There is no pretence here, just humility and appreciation for the isolation and the desire to protect it!

We have plenty of quiet and time is ours to explore the Ubuntu philosophy that is so relevant and rich in Botswana. We explore how to integrate it into our lives both here and now and in every scape we find ourselves, be it the boardroom, our homes and with our neighbours.
A campfire overlooking the water and the plains beyond is the centrepiece of the camp. Facilities are shared 2 berth ripstop canvas dome tents with sewn in groundsheets. Mattresses, sleeping bags, pillows and towels are provided. There are shared compost toilets and bucket showers.
