Guide & Guide Trainer Mentoring
AMS has a long standing reputation in the safari industry offering dedicated and passionate guide training training & mentoring services. A keystone, for us, is the immense value of ‘putting back’ thereby inspiring, motivating and assisting a new generation of guides.
The training industry is a congested affair, with many excellent training providers available. This is in stark contrast with Alan’s humble beginnings as a guide; in those days there was no such standard or training facility, and Alan began guiding some years before the The Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA), or any training provider, was even formed. Its over three decades of functional, practical and meaningful guiding experience that he brings into our training services. Alan in a certified FGASA mentor.
This mentoring is not typically theory-based, and consists more of subtle situational awareness skills. What lies beneath the surface and are often overlooked in guide training manuals. What the industry refers to as ‘soft-skills’ but actually should be more dominant within the guiding philosophy. Walking, tracking and stalking are essential here. It is within this landscape that impactful discovery and transformational personal leadership development can emerge.
Guiding is about passion, commitment and a love for all things wild. A lifestyle of conservation culture. These are all deeply personal but common in all dedicated guides. Mentoring, for us, is essential to plug-in to these motivations, to keep the flames of passion alive … to tell the story of our fundamantal relationship with wilderness.
