SOUND SAFARI with DEREK SOLOMON
@ Sausage Tree Camp, Balule Conservancy / South Africa
Minimum 4 people, max 6 people.
Have you ever wondered... if hippos talk underwater?
If ants talk at all?
Why elephant shrews tap dance?
Why birds sing at dawn?
* Join an exciting Sound Safari with legendary safari guide, conservationist and wildlife sound expert Derek Solomon to find the answers.
* Using specialised sound equipment, we eavesdrop on the wild.
Hear what mammals, birds, insects and other animals have to say.
* Based at the charming tented Sausage Tree Safari Camp in the Balule Conservancy.
What is it all about?
The safari starts after lunch with a fascinating talk on the world of sound: including how and why the big cats roar, birds sing and insects chatter. Moving onto infrasonic elephant rumbles and underwater conversations by hippo, fish and others; as well as non-vocal sounds by mammals and birds, and we wrap up with hints and tips on sound recording with basic equipment including smartphones.
We then head off on the afternoon game drive to listen to nature’s orchestra amplified through individual headphones. As night falls, we tune in to the nocturnal soundscape before returning to camp.
An early start the next morning gets us out on a drive to catch the dawn chorus. We stop regularly to listen in to a host of other sounds before heading back to camp for breakfast.
The two night stay includes time at one of the dams with the hippos and allows us to expand our game drive activities to cover more ground and listen in to more wildlife.
