Why the Okavango?
The timeless wild-land of the Okavango is the largest inland delta in the world, and one of the most pristine wilderness areas on the planet. A vast tapestry of waterways, lagoons, floodplains and islands support an astonishing array of game. Here, far beyond the last vehicle or motor-boat, is where our adventures begin. Access is only by traditional dugout canoe and on foot. Walks on the islands are in search of elephant, lion, buffalo, wild dog, leopard, giraffe and a vast cast of characters. Tracking and stalking is part of the fare, ensuring stirring and exciting encounters along the way.
What we will be doing
Day 1: |
The trail begins on arrival in Maun from where we arrange a charter flight to our Okavango base. The flight lasts about 25 minutes and is a wonderful bird’s-eye introduction to this remarkable wilderness which extends from horizon to horizon. Afternoon walk, dinner and overnight.
|
Day 2: |
After breakfast we load our dugout canoes (mekoro) with all the camping supplies and head out to a remote backwater of Chiefs Island. Once we select a spot we set up a basic fly-camp with domes tents and bucket showers. Meals are prepared on the fire and water drawn from the delta. Simple living at its best! An afternoon introductory walk with dinner at the campfire.
|
Days 3+4 |
Days of tracking and walking in search of big game. We have no set routes, and the walks depends on the signs, sounds and tracks of game, as well as our group dynamics or intentions. This, and stalking of wild animals is fundamental to the trail experience, and therefore the safety of all participants is of paramount importance. Walking procedures, safety protocols and do’s & don’ts are thoroughly explained, and soon become second nature to the trail party. All walks and interactions are facilitated and managed by Alan. There may not be wifi out here, but the connection is great!
|
Day 5 |
Break camp and pole back to base camp, exploring islands on the way. Hot showers and cold drinks await our return. An afternoon poling excursion is available followed by dinner and overnight.
|
Day 6: |
Final morning morning walk followed by breakfast. Depart by air to Maun where the trail ends.
|
Please note that we could extend the trail by arranging flights to other camps in the Delta, Moremi, Linyanti, Chobe or Makgadikgadi. Even Victoria Fall is easily accessible.
